The equation of state of CsCl-structured FeSi to 40 GPa: Implications for silicon in the Earth's core

چکیده
[1] We have measured the compressibility of CsClstructured FeSi to 40 GPa by X-ray powder diffraction using synchrotron radiation. A third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state fit to the experimental data yields V0 = 21.74 ± 0.02 Å, with a K0 of 184 ± 5 GPa and K 0 0 = 4.2 ± 0.3. The measured density and elastic properties of CsClFeSi are consistent with silicon being a major element in the Earth’s core.

Equation of state and elasticity of FeSi
[1] FeSi may be one of the main products of the reaction between molten iron and mantle silicates. We use both the Local Density Approximation (LDA) and the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) to Density Functional Theory (DFT) to analyze the structural behavior of FeSi and to determine its elastic properties up to high pressures. According to our calculations, at lowermost mantle pressure...

[1] The Earth’s core is expected to contain around 10 wt % light elements (S, Si, O, possibly C, H, etc.) alloyed with Fe and Ni. Very little is known about these alloys at pressures and temperatures of the core. Here, using the evolutionary crystal structure prediction methodology, we investigate FeSi compounds at pressures of up to 400 GPa, i.e. covering the pressure range of the Earth’s core...
متن کاملHIGH PRESSURE BEHAVIOR OF KCl: STRUCTURAL AND ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES
The high pressure behavior of the structural and electronic properties of KC1 is studied with use of the density functional pseudopotential method within local-density approximation. Atzero pressure, the rocksalt phase is found to be lower in energy than CsCl structure. However, we predict a phase transition into CsCI structure at a pressure of about 1.5 GPa. The calculated ground state pro...

The shock equation of state of serpentine has been determined to 150 GPa. Four distinct regions occur along the Hugoniot: a low-pressure phase, a mixed phase region, a high-pressure phase, and a very high pressure phase. The low-pressure phase (LPP) exists under shock pressures to about 40 GPa. This material exhibits shock properties that are partially consistent with those of low pressure serp...

The compressibility factor of nonassociated chain molecules composed of hard convex core Yukawa segments was derived with SAFT-VR and an extension of the Barker-Henderson perturbation theory for convex bodies. The temperature-dependent chain and dispersion compressibility factors were derived using the Yukawa potential. The effects of temperature, packing fraction, and segment number on the com...
